From Spotlight to Struggle: Auntie Bee Shares Her Disappointing Experience in the Acting World

From Spotlight to Struggle: Auntie Bee Shares Her Disappointing Experience in the Acting World

A well-known character in Ghanaian cinema, Auntie Bee has expressed her dissatisfaction at not receiving any concrete advantages from her more than two-decade acting career.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during her appearance on Accra FM’s midmorning show with Nana Romeo, the seasoned actress disclosed that she hasn’t accomplished anything in her lengthy career.

Auntie Bee, whose true name is Harriet Naa Akleh Okantey, bemoaned during the interview that her acting career has only brought her popularity. “My only claim to fame from the movies is that it brings me encouragement whenever I visit the area,” she remarked.

She did, however, acknowledge that she possesses no material possessions, with the exception of a car that Rev. Obofour, the founder and prelate of Anointed Palace Church, gave her as a present because he was impressed by her acting career.

Auntie Bee’s epiphany extended beyond worldly belongings. She begrudged herself of the sacrifices she had to make for her work. “I was so focused on my career as an actress that I didn’t even take time off to get married and have kids because I thought it would ruin my career,” the actress revealed.

The seasoned actress also discussed the financial difficulties that she and her peers had in their prime. “There was only enough money from the job to sustain you when we were popular for acting,” she clarified.

She brought up the striking contrast between the far larger salaries enjoyed by today’s actors. Auntie Bee said, “Acting is very lucrative these days, but unfortunately, we have aged out and are unable to find work.”
